Cake Plate Tutorial

This is a fun and easy tutorial. You will have to make a trip to the thrift store for most of your crafting supplies on this one. You need to find a plate that you want to turn into a cake stand. I always see these plates that were really popular in the 60's and 70's. (maybe the 80's too?)They are stoneware from Japan. They have several patterns out there. I always see a few here and there and really like the plates. Most of the time I can only find one or three of the same pattern. You can choose any plates you want.
Next head over to the glass section and find a base for your plate. My plates are a little heavy so I made sure to choose a heavy base so they wont topple. I think it would be safe to make all the bases a little heavy. The best ones to use I think are the thick heavy crystal candlesticks. They are so pretty when the light hits them. Which you really can't see in my photos. (it's been raining for 2 days so I am unable to get that amazing South Florida light in my photos) Remember when you are at the thrift store choosing your base to make sure its flat and smooth on the part you plan to glue to the base. Test them out in the store. Just put the plate on top and move back and forth. Make sure you dont feel it bumpy. Then turn the plate upside down and put the base on there and move it back and forth again. You want to make sure it will not wobble. I recommend E6000 glue. Small cocktail classes and icec ream dishes make perfect bases too. Also remember when your at the thrift store, they don't clean the glass so when you get home you must clean it before you glue both pieces. Then you will also see how much your glass will sparkle.

I went a little crazy and made a few for my upcoming craft show.
This was a super fun project. I am not sure what I had more fun in the thrifting or the making.
Let the glue set over night. I would wait 3 to 5 days before using it.

This is a perfect gift idea you can make for Mom on Mother's day.

I am so keeping a few. They look really good with Pyrex.

Thrifty Monday Smiles

I went thrifting this morning. I just love thrift stores! You never know what you will find.
I found a set of 2 vintage suitcases. The insides are perfectly clean and cute. I also found a Vera table cloth and napkins. I am thinking this might be a newer set. I am not getting a vintage vibe from it. I do love the colors. I am going to put that set of linen in my Etsy shop for sale this week.

I went crazy over a few vintage plates. I purchased the smaller ones. That is all they had anyhow. I just love the floral prints on each one. I am going to make them into mini cake stands. I am so excited to play with them. I can't wait. I found a red vintage fabric bread bread basket. Remember I have the info here on how to make one of your very own. I do love finding the vintage ones. I have 3 now in my collection. Green basket is for the craft room closet. I am going to hang it in there. I purchased 2 sets of 4 pink vintage napkins. I am going to do something pretty with them in my room. I have been waiting to find something like those for a long time now. I am ever so so so excited about them and so thrilled I paid 50 cents for each set.
I really love these plates. I bought these to make and sell. I think I am keeping a few.
Why yes that is the big yellow Pyrex bowl your seeing.
I am totally making over that 3 tier cake stand. I have been waiting to find one. Most of the time they are broken and not fixable. Or really heavy and over priced. This one is very lightweight. I am going to use it at the craft shows. *perfect*
Always the yellow but never the blue. I will find you little small blue Pyrex bowl. I giggle every time I find another yellow. That means a WHOLE another set I have to put together. This makes number 7. I have 2 sets almost completed. I just need the blue bowls. Sure I can buy them from Etsy or Ebay but I really want my set to be thrifted all the way. I may get impatient. I love that pink and aqua vintage scarf. It's totally perfect. I can't wait to wear it.

Quote I stole

"No one is in control of your happiness but you; therefore, you have the power to change anything about yourself or your life that you want to change. Find something you're passionate about and keep tremendously interested in it. I'm doing what I think I was put on this earth to do. And I'm really grateful to have something that I'm passionate about and that I think is profoundly important."

I have no idea who wrote this but its been my motto since I broke free of depression over 10 years ago. I post quotes like this all the time in my facebook updates. I myself need encouraging words and to hear or read them often. So quickly we can do damage to ourselves by our own thinking. You can just as quickly make yourself happy too. I take a few quotes and plaster them all over my room and on the fridge and on the mirror to remind myself. It keeps me smiling and happy. Just wanted to share.

What have I been doing?

I am making over a vintage suitcase. I have this idea running around in my head. I hope to get it finished in time for the ODD Duck show. I have been sewing away. I am getting on top of things so I will not be far behind and have to panic scribble price tags day of the craft show again. I always think I priced everything and then I get to the show and there are items I totally forgot to ticket. Eek. I am running booth display ideas in my head. I have a few new projects I am working on and will test them out at the show and see if they sell. Once finished I will share photos of them with you. I always find it refreshing to make and offer new items at the craft shows. It keeps me from getting bored and I get to play. I have 5 Raggedy Andy's waiting for clothing. I have 2 personal doll orders I must show off too. Oh I have some photo list for you I am making up.

The Pyrex well is dry around here. I have not been able to find anything lately.
I did find this pink lovely. Its a little... ok it's a lot scuffed. But there is still lots of color left in this bowl, and it's PINK. This seems to be the same size as the green bowl in the primary set. I paid $2 for it. I quickly grabbed it and hugged it. (what like hugging Pyrex is weird?) HA! I love the size of it and the color. I was so happy to see it.

Hooray it's Pyrex!

Baby ducks getting bigger.

Another duck started laying eggs in the front yard in the very same spot as the other duck. Oh my, here we go again!! This duck actually hangs out in my back yard all the time with the male duck. He is the daddy. Them 2 follow each other around all the the time. He follows her to the nest while she lays and then follows her back to the yard and the lake.
A new family appeared the 3 days ago. So little those ducks are. Like little balls of fluff with feet.

Look how big the OTHER ducks are getting. These are the only ones I see lately. (besides the new family that just showed up). They are getting so big. Like I said, its a tough life on the lake if your a baby ducky. Even at this size they still get snatched. I witness the most horrible attack yet. I cried so hard. My little favorite all brown headed duck. Gone. It was devastating for me. I hate hawks. The yucky mean hawk came down and grabbed him and another duck. He dropped them both. Brown headed little love drowned. The other one made it to shore and was bleeding and limping. I thought he was a goner too. NOPE. He HEALED and is back to running with his crew. I was crying so hard when this happened. I was freaking out kicking and screaming and screaming WHy WHy WHy. You can imagine. Later that day mama duck came by and she saw me in the window in the kitchen. She flew up to the window and stayed on the little ledge. Something she has NEVER done before and has not again. She looked at me for a long time. I was looking at her. Face to face through the glass. I felt this calming inside. I told her, I am so sorry I could not help your baby. She just looked at me as if it was all ok. She has 8 left.
They started peeking into the window like the mama does.

They all snuggle up in the afternoon behind the compost box.
No one can get to them there.

March Pot Luck Crafty Party

We had a crafty party yesterday! At my house!

There was way more food. I just didn't get any photos cause I was too busy eating.

note to self: never give Tiffany the camera.
We made statement necklaces. I loved making them. I am addicted now.

I have not had internet for a few days. It was really bothering me so bad. Someone from the city or the power company dug a hole in our front yard and cut the wire. Boy I am addicted to the internet. I use it for a cookbook, email, research, coupon clipping, phone book and more and not having it for a few days made me Eeeeeeekkkkkk inside. I am BACK. WooHoo!
